An excerpt …
(they have a book on dog training)
DEVIN: Yeah. Just started. How cool … we’re training our dogs together. Let’s see what’s next. (both Micah and Devin begin to read)
HARLEY DOG: (after a pause … only Harley and Scout can hear each other) Can you believe this?
SCOUT DOG: No. I’ve been trying not to laugh.
HARLEY DOG: What do they think we are?
SCOUT DOG: (a pause, then) Dogs. (both dogs look at each other a moment then laugh) Sorry. Couldn’t help that.
HARLEY DOG: How long you been training him?
SCOUT DOG: Started last week. He picked me up at the pound. You learn a lot in a dog pound.
HARLEY DOG: I’ve heard stories … never actually seen one.
(the first trick)
DEVIN: (reading) “Begin with simple tasks such as fetching a stick.” Okay, Harley. Here’s your first test. (standing and picking up a stick) See the stick?
SCOUT DOG: Does he think you’re blind?
DEVIN: Okay. Fetch! (Devin tosses the imaginary stick) Come on, boy! Fetch! Fetch!
HARLEY DOG: : Should I?
SCOUT DOG: Humor him.
HARLEY DOG: Very well. (Harley suddenly goes into a spasm of happy-puppy frenzy, energetically dashes after the stick, picking it up in his mouth and returning it to Devin)
SCOUT DOG: That was a work of art.
HARLEY DOG: Thanks
(the dog has a plan)
SCOUT DOG: Cool!
HARLEY DOG: You gotta milk it for all it’s worth.
DEVIN: Now just a little more … come on, boy, just a little more … (Harley growls, gets a biscuit, growls a little more, gets another, eventually building to all-out barking and biscuit tossing)
SCOUT DOG: What a trick!
HARLEY DOG: You ever see such a well-trained human in your life? With a little patience you can teach ‘em anything!
